Looking for a job is not merely submitting resumes and hoping for feedback. It can feel like a competition to catch the eye of recruiters. This struggle is especially pronounced in highly competitive countries like the United States. Numerous difficulties block individuals from achieving steady employment:
- High competition. One position can receive applications from tens or even hundreds of people. These applicants' rich portfolios and endorsements make it harder for fresh professionals to compete.
- Expectation of an established portfolio. Employers frequently request experience that job seekers struggle to obtain without being given initial opportunities.
- Absence of recommendations. Lacking prior references, job seekers often find themselves excluded from recruiters’ consideration lists.
- Barriers related to job location. In rural or less populated areas, job availability may be scarce.
- Restricted opportunities for freelancers. The increasing trend of remote work hasn’t eliminated employers’ bias towards on-site staff.
For beginners or career changers, these obstacles can seem insurmountable. As a result, many job seekers lose motivation or settle for low-paying positions just to cover basic needs.
There Is a Way Out. One effective alternative is to start offering your services through marketplaces or freelance platforms. Marketplaces allow individuals to showcase their skills and attract clients regardless of their background.
Why Is It So Hard to Find Work Nearby?
Most people assume local job hunting should be straightforward. However, in practice, this approach often encounters unexpected difficulties:
- Limited job options. Job availability in rural areas or city suburbs is often scarce, particularly in niche industries.
- Qualification gaps. You may find that your expertise isn’t needed locally. For example, tech professionals may find only manual labor roles locally.
- Below-market salaries. Local employers may offer wages significantly below the market rate.
- Inconvenient work hours. Even if a job is nearby, the schedule might be inconvenient.
The Key Point. The digital age has reduced the importance of location for work. With the development of technology and job platforms, you can offer your services not only in your city but nationwide. Moreover, this approach allows you to select clients who are willing to pay fair rates for your skills rather than just for convenient location.
Interestingly, those who have already tried working through marketplaces report increased flexibility and access to a broader range of clients. One user of another platform shared that this model allowed them to double their income, eliminating the need to search for local orders.
The Role of Marketplaces in Simplifying Job Hunting
Marketplaces are a game-changer for professionals facing employment difficulties. These platforms make earning easy, even for those without portfolios or strong resumes.
- Broader client base. You are no longer limited by your city or region.
- Low initial investment. Starting on a marketplace requires almost no financial overhead.
- Adaptable timelines. These platforms allow for a work-life balance tailored to individual preferences.
- Transaction protection mechanisms. Built-in safeguards ensure you receive fair compensation for your efforts.
A Notable Case. Link to his story - Find Leads. One marketplace user shared their story: starting with a small gig on the platform, they gradually turned it into a stable income source. With continuous improvement supported by feedback, they expanded their professional reach.

Medical staff on the front line of the battle against mpox in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have told the BBC they are desperate for vaccines to arrive so they can stem the rate of new infections.

At a treatment centre in South Kivu province that the BBC visited in the epicentre of the outbreak, they say more patients are arriving every day - especially babies - and there is a shortage of essential equipment.

Mpox - formerly known as monkeypox - is a highly contagious disease and has killed at least 635 people in DR Congo this year.
Even though 200,000 vaccines, donated by the European Commission, were flown into the capital, Kinshasa, last week, they are yet to be transported across this vast country - and it could be several weeks before they reach South Kivu.
“We've learned from social media that the vaccine is already available,” Emmanuel Fikiri, a nurse working at the clinic that has been turned into a specialist centre to tackle the virus, told the BBC.
He said this was the first time he had treated patients with mpox and every day he feared catching it and passing it on to his own children - aged seven, five and one.
“You saw how I touched the patients because that's my job as a nurse. So, we're asking the government to help us by first giving us the vaccines.”
The reason it will take time to transport the vaccines is that they need to be stored at a precise temperature - below freezing - to maintain their potency, plus they need to be sent to rural areas of South Kivu, like Kamituga, Kavumu and Lwiro, where the outbreak is rife.
The lack of infrastructure and bad roads mean that helicopters could possibly be used to drop some of the vaccines, which will further drive up costs in a country that is already struggling financially.
At the community clinic, Dr Pacifique Karanzo appeared fatigued and downbeat having been rushed off his feet all morning.
Although he wore a face shield, I could see the sweat running down his face. He said he was saddened to see patients sharing beds.
“You will even see that the patients are sleeping on the floor,” he told me, clearly exasperated.
“The only support we have already had is a little medicine for the patients and water. As far as other challenges are concerned, there's still no staff motivation.”
